Aims

This school aims to show the students and young researchers certain recent developments and examples of mathematical modelings of the tropical and Amazonian ecosystems. The principal goal will consist in revealing the important part which play mathematical methods in the fields of the biodiversity and sustainability of natural resources (forests, host-parasite systems, terrestrial and coastal ecosystems, etc) and to provide basic tools for modeling and simulation. The School will facilitate the contacts between the participants, coming from various Latin-American and Caribbean countries, and the internationally recognized specialists.

The School is organized within the framework of the Network Europe - Latin America in Applied Mathematics (REALMA) whose main goal is to promote and strengthen the training in the field of applied mathematics in the Latin America and Caribbean areas. It will be followed by a three days international seminar on the same topics.

Scientific Program

Mathematical models:

  • « Introduction to Mathematical Epidemiology » (6 hrs, Gauthier Sallet, LORIA, France)
  • « Modeling of infectious diseases » (6 hrs, Jorge X. Velasco Hernández, Instituto Mexicano del Petróleo (IMP), México)
  • « Models of fishing and Sustainability » (6 hrs, Héctor Ramírez, CMM, Universidad de Chile, Chile, and Michel De Lara, ENPC, Paris, France)
  • « Models, Sustainability and Easily Flooded Landscapes in Amazonia » (6 hrs, Maurício Viera Kritz, Laboratorio Nacional de Computaçâo Cientifica, Brazil)

Data-processing tools for modeling:

  • « Sustainable control of fischings with Scilab » (4 hrs, Héctor Ramírez, CMM, Universidad de Chile, Chile, and Michel De Lara, ENPC, Paris, France)
  • « Modeling dynamic systems with MM&S » (4 hrs, Nguyen Van Sinh, Vietnam)

Workshops:

Those interested in presenting their work related to the themes of the school may do so in sessions organised the last day (Friday), after evaluation by members of the scientific committee: The summary must be sent before the registration deadline by e-mail to Marc.Lassonde@univ-ag.fr.

Prerequisites

The school is mainly addressed to postgraduate students and young researchers from Latin America and the Caribbean wishing to enrich and deepen their knowledge in the field of mathematical modeling of eco-systems. Therefore, potential participant must possess at least Bachelor’s degree in mathematical sciences or Master’s degree in economics, engineering or natural sciences.

Request for financial support

In order to request financial support, please fill in the enclosed form and send it back by e-mail before the registration deadline for the school.

After analysis of the files, we might grant exemptions of registration fee and/or cover expenses for housing and/or travelling for a limited number of candidates coming from developing countries, who cannot obtain financial support from other organizations. You will receive a reply concerning acceptance of your request not later than four weeks before the beginning of the school.
